What this test measures

The Basic Health Profile consolidates five laboratory tests into a single screening that spans blood cell health, organ function, cardiovascular risk, blood sugar control, and kidney and urinary tract status. The Complete Blood Count (CBC) evaluates red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, flagging conditions like anemia, infection, and clotting abnormalities. The Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) measures 14 substances including glucose, electrolytes, and markers of kidney and liver function.

The Lipid Panel reports cholesterol and triglyceride levels to assess cardiovascular risk. The Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test reflects average blood sugar control over the preceding two to three months, providing a longer-range view than a single glucose measurement and serving as a screening tool for diabetes. The Urinalysis examines urine composition for signs of kidney stress, urinary tract infection, and other systemic conditions. Together, these five tests cover a broad spectrum of routine health markers and are well suited for annual wellness checks and preventive care.

Who should consider this test

You might consider this test if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Individuals seeking a comprehensive annual health screening to establish baseline values for future monitoring and detect potential health issues before symptoms develop.
  • Adults with family history of diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, or other chronic conditions who want proactive health monitoring to identify risk factors early.
  • People experiencing unexplained symptoms such as fatigue, frequent urination, increased thirst, unexplained weight changes, or recurrent infections that may indicate underlying health conditions.
  • Those with risk factors for cardiovascular disease including obesity, sedentary lifestyle, smoking history, or high blood pressure who need regular monitoring of cholesterol and metabolic markers.
  • Individuals over 40 years old who want comprehensive health monitoring as part of preventive healthcare, as many chronic conditions become more common with age.
  • People preparing for major life changes such as starting a new exercise program, making dietary modifications, or beginning preventive health interventions who need baseline health measurements.
  • Adults who have not had comprehensive laboratory testing in the past year and want to ensure their overall health status is optimal.

What to expect

Preparation

Fast for 9-12 hours before your appointment, avoiding all food and beverages except water. Continue taking prescribed medications unless specifically instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider. Avoid strenuous exercise 24 hours before testing as it may affect some blood values.

Sample Type

Blood collection involves a standard venipuncture from your arm, typically taking 5-10 minutes. You will also provide a urine sample in a sterile container, which should be a midstream clean-catch specimen for optimal accuracy.

Collection

At the testing location, you will check in and provide identification. A trained phlebotomist will collect your blood sample using sterile techniques. You will then be directed to provide a urine sample in a private restroom. The entire process typically takes 15-20 minutes.

Turnaround

Results are typically available within 1-3 business days and will be delivered through your secure online portal. Complex cases may take slightly longer for processing and review.

Understanding your results

Results span multiple body systems, so they are most useful when reviewed as a complete set rather than one test at a time. Each component has its own reference range, and healthcare providers interpret the findings in the context of symptoms, medical history, medications, and overall health status to determine whether any out-of-range values warrant further investigation.

PopulationReference RangeNotes
Adult MalesHemoglobin: 14-17.5 g/dL, RBC: 4.5-5.9 million/mcLCBC values for adult men
Adult FemalesHemoglobin: 12.3-15.3 g/dL, RBC: 4.1-5.1 million/mcLCBC values for adult women
AdultsTotal Cholesterol: Below 200 mg/dL, HDL: Above 60 mg/dLLipid panel optimal values
AdultsA1C: Below 5.7%Normal diabetes screening range
AdultsUrine Specific Gravity: 1.005-1.030Normal urine concentration range

Reference ranges may vary by laboratory and individual factors. Results should be interpreted by a healthcare provider in the context of your overall health.

What does a “Low” result mean?

Low values typically have different implications depending on the test component. Low blood cell counts may indicate anemia, bone marrow problems, or certain medications' effects. Low CMP values may occur with malnutrition, overhydration, medication effects, or hormonal disorders. Low HDL cholesterol is associated with higher cardiovascular risk. Low A1C values are generally favorable, while dilute urine might indicate excessive fluid intake or certain medical conditions affecting kidney concentration ability.

What does a “High” result mean?

Elevated results may indicate various conditions depending on the specific test. High blood cell counts might suggest infection, inflammation, or blood disorders. Elevated CMP values may indicate dehydration, kidney disease, liver dysfunction, diabetes, or electrolyte imbalance. High triglycerides, high LDL cholesterol are associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk. Elevated A1C levels may indicate prediabetes or diabetes, while abnormal urinalysis findings might suggest kidney problems or urinary tract infections.
