What this test measures
A Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) measures eight substances in the blood that together paint a clear picture of kidney performance, blood sugar regulation, and electrolyte balance. It is a streamlined version of the broader CMP, focusing on the markers most relevant to metabolism and fluid status.
The panel reports glucose (a key indicator of how the body handles blood sugar), calcium, and a group of electrolytes: sodium, potassium, chloride, and carbon dioxide (bicarbonate). It also includes creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN), two waste products the kidneys filter out of the bloodstream. Electrolytes are critical for nerve signaling, muscle contraction, and maintaining the body's acid-base equilibrium. Healthcare providers order the BMP for routine wellness screenings, to monitor patients on certain medications, and to track the progress of conditions like diabetes or kidney disease.
What's included
Who should consider this test
You might consider this test if you are experiencing any of the following:
- Individuals having routine health screenings or annual wellness exams
- Those with symptoms such as fatigue, confusion, dehydration, muscle weakness, or frequent urination
- Patients taking medications that may affect kidney or electrolyte levels, such as diuretics or blood pressure medications
- People with diabetes who need regular monitoring of blood sugar levels
- Individuals with kidney disease, high blood pressure, or other chronic conditions requiring metabolic monitoring
- Those experiencing general symptoms that could indicate metabolic disorders or electrolyte imbalances
What to expect
Preparation
Fasting for 8-12 hours before the test is typically required for accurate glucose measurements. This means not eating or drinking anything except water during this period. Patients should continue taking prescribed medications unless specifically instructed otherwise by their healthcare provider.
Sample Type
A small blood sample is collected from a vein in the arm using a standard needle and collection tube. The procedure is quick and routine.
Collection
A healthcare professional will clean the arm area, insert a needle to draw blood into collection tubes, and apply a bandage. The entire process typically takes just a few minutes with minimal discomfort.
Turnaround
Results are usually available within 1-3 business days after sample collection. Some laboratories may provide results as quickly as 24-48 hours.
Understanding your results
Each of the eight values in the BMP is presented alongside a reference range that represents the expected results for healthy individuals. A single out-of-range number does not necessarily point to a medical condition; recent meals, hydration level, medications, and time of day can all influence results. Healthcare providers interpret BMP findings within the broader context of symptoms, medical history, and any other diagnostic information available before deciding whether additional evaluation is needed.
| Population | Reference Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Adults | Glucose: 74-99 mg/dL, Calcium: 8.5-10.2 mg/dL, BUN: 7-21 mg/dL | Reference ranges may vary slightly between laboratories |
Reference ranges shown are general guidelines. Your lab report will include the specific reference range used by the laboratory that processed your sample, which is the authoritative range for interpreting your results.
What does a “Low” result mean?
Low results can also indicate health concerns that need attention. Hypoglycemia is less frequently observed but may result from conditions such as insulinoma, hypopituitarism or insulin-induced hypoglycemia. Low electrolyte levels might suggest dehydration, certain medications effects, or underlying conditions affecting fluid and mineral balance. Additional testing may be needed to determine the underlying cause of abnormal results.
What does a “High” result mean?
Elevated results may indicate various conditions depending on which marker is affected. High glucose levels may be a sign of diabetes, while high levels of BUN and creatinine could mean the kidneys aren't working well. If calcium is high, there might be a liver, kidney, or thyroid problem. Abnormal electrolyte levels may suggest dehydration, kidney disease, or other metabolic disorders that require further evaluation.
