What this test measures

This test screens for two of the most prevalent sexually transmitted infections in the United States, chlamydia (caused by Chlamydia trachomatis) and gonorrhea (caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae), using a single urine sample. The testing method is nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT), which detects bacterial genetic material with exceptional accuracy and is considered the gold standard for diagnosing these infections.

NAAT technology can identify even small quantities of bacterial DNA or RNA in a first-catch urine specimen (the initial stream), eliminating the need for swab-based collection. The method achieves sensitivity above 99% and specificity above 99%, meaning it rarely misses true infections and rarely produces false positives. Screening is particularly important because the majority of chlamydial and gonococcal infections produce no symptoms. Without testing, these infections can persist silently and lead to complications including pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and increased susceptibility to other STIs.

Who should consider this test

You might consider this test if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Sexually active individuals who have had unprotected sex or want to verify their sexual health status
  • People with new sexual partners or multiple partners who want peace of mind
  • Those experiencing symptoms like unusual discharge, burning during urination, or pelvic pain
  • Individuals whose current or former partners have tested positive for chlamydia or gonorrhea
  • Anyone who has never been tested for STDs but is sexually active
  • People in committed relationships who want to confirm both partners are infection-free
  • Those preparing to start a new relationship and want to know their status

What to expect

Preparation

Avoid urinating for 1-2 hours before your test to ensure adequate bacterial concentration. No fasting, special diet, or other restrictions are needed. Continue taking any medications as prescribed unless specifically advised otherwise.

Sample Type

You'll provide a first-catch urine sample (the initial 20-30mL of your urine stream) in a sterile collection cup. The process is quick, private, and non-invasive - no uncomfortable swabbing required.

Collection

Walk into any participating lab location with a valid photo ID. No appointment is necessary. The friendly staff will provide you with a collection cup and private restroom facilities to collect your sample.

Turnaround

Results are typically available within 1-3 business days and will be securely delivered through your online patient portal or by phone, depending on your preference.

Understanding your results

Results are reported as "Detected" or "Not Detected" for each organism separately. A "Detected" result indicates that genetic material from Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhoeae was identified in the sample, strongly supporting a diagnosis of infection. A "Not Detected" result indicates no bacterial genetic material was found. Both chlamydia and gonorrhea are bacterial infections that respond well to antibiotic treatment, particularly when caught early. Healthcare providers can discuss treatment options and partner notification following a positive result.

PopulationReference RangeNotes
All adultsNot DetectedNormal result - no bacterial genetic material found
All adultsDetectedPositive result - bacterial infection present, treatment needed

Reference ranges shown are general guidelines. Your lab report will include the specific reference range used by the laboratory that processed your sample, which is the authoritative range for interpreting your results.

What does a “Low” result mean?

A "not detected" result means no bacterial genetic material was found in your sample, suggesting you do not currently have these infections. However, a negative result does not exclude the possibility of infection if tested too early after exposure or if the infection is present at sites not tested by urine (such as throat or rectum).

What does a “High” result mean?

A "detected" result means bacterial genetic material was found in your sample, indicating an active chlamydia and/or gonorrhea infection. Both gonorrhea and chlamydia can be cured with the right medicine from your healthcare provider. Prompt treatment is important to prevent complications and reduce transmission risk.

Privacy & confidentiality

Your test results are completely confidential and delivered through a secure online portal or private phone consultation. Results are never shared with employers, insurance companies, or anyone else without your explicit consent. All testing is conducted with complete discretion to protect your privacy.
