What this test measures

This blood test detects IgG antibodies to herpes simplex virus, screening for both HSV-1 and HSV-2 and differentiating between the two types. HSV-1 is most commonly associated with oral herpes (cold sores), while HSV-2 is more frequently linked to genital herpes, though either type can cause infection at either location. Herpes is extremely common, and many people who carry the virus experience no symptoms or symptoms mild enough to go unrecognized.

The test identifies IgG antibodies, which are proteins the immune system produces in response to herpes exposure. These antibodies typically develop within a few weeks to three months after initial infection and remain detectable for life, regardless of whether the virus is actively causing symptoms. This means the test can identify herpes status even in the absence of sores or outbreaks. Because herpes can be transmitted during asymptomatic periods, knowing one's status is a practical step for making informed decisions about sexual health and reducing transmission risk.

Who should consider this test

You might consider this test if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Individuals experiencing recurring sores or blisters on the mouth, genitals, or other areas that may be herpes-related
  • People whose sexual partners have been diagnosed with herpes or have symptoms that could be herpes
  • Those wanting to understand their complete STD status, especially if they have multiple sexual partners
  • Individuals who have had unprotected sexual contact and want comprehensive testing for peace of mind
  • People experiencing symptoms like painful urination, unusual discharge, or flu-like symptoms with genital discomfort
  • Anyone seeking confidential testing without the need for an uncomfortable doctor visit or insurance involvement

Understanding your results

Results are reported as index values for each virus type (HSV-1 and HSV-2). Values below 0.90 are considered negative (no antibodies detected), values above 1.10 are considered positive (antibodies detected, indicating past exposure), and values between 0.90 and 1.10 fall into an equivocal zone where retesting after several weeks may be recommended. A positive result indicates that exposure to the virus has occurred at some point; it does not necessarily mean an active outbreak is present. Healthcare providers interpret results alongside symptoms, exposure history, and clinical context, and can discuss what a positive or negative result means for individual health management and partner communication.

PopulationReference RangeNotes
HSV-1 IgGIndex <0.91: Negative, 0.91-1.09: Equivocal, ≥1.10: PositiveIndicates past exposure to HSV-1
HSV-2 IgGIndex <0.91: Negative, 0.91-1.09: Equivocal, ≥1.10: PositiveIndicates past exposure to HSV-2

Reference ranges shown are general guidelines. Your lab report will include the specific reference range used by the laboratory that processed your sample, which is the authoritative range for interpreting your results.

What does a “Low” result mean?

A negative result indicates no current or previous infection with HSV-1 or HSV-2 has been detected. However, if you were recently exposed, antibodies may not yet be detectable, and retesting in 6-12 weeks may be recommended.

What does a “High” result mean?

A positive result indicates the presence of IgG antibodies specific to HSV-1 or HSV-2, suggesting previous exposure to the virus. This may mean you have had the infection for weeks, months, or even years, as antibodies can remain detectable for life once developed.

Privacy & confidentiality

Your test results are delivered securely through your private online account and are never shared with employers, insurance companies, or government agencies. All testing is completely confidential and conducted at certified laboratories with strict privacy protocols.
