What this test measures

This test screens for high-risk strains of human papillomavirus (HPV) that are most strongly linked to the development of cervical precancer and cancer. The test detects 14 high-risk HPV types, including HPV 16 and HPV 18, which together account for the majority of HPV-related cervical cancers. Unlike a Pap test, which looks for abnormal cell changes that have already occurred, the HPV test identifies the viral infection that causes those changes, often years before any cellular abnormalities develop.

HPV is extremely common, and most infections resolve on their own without causing harm. The clinical concern is with persistent high-risk HPV infections that do not clear, as these can gradually trigger the precancerous cell changes that lead to cervical cancer if left unmonitored. Self-collected samples using approved devices have been shown to be comparably accurate to clinician-collected specimens, providing a reliable screening option with the convenience and privacy of at-home collection.

Who should consider this test

You might consider this test if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Women aged 25-65 who need routine cervical cancer screening but prefer the privacy and convenience of at-home testing
  • Those who have been putting off cervical cancer screening due to discomfort with pelvic exams or scheduling difficulties
  • Women with a history of abnormal Pap test results who need follow-up HPV testing
  • Individuals who have limited access to gynecological care or face barriers to regular screening
  • Those seeking a convenient way to stay current with recommended cervical cancer prevention guidelines
  • Women who want to take control of their reproductive health with a private, accurate screening option

Understanding your results

Results are reported as either positive (high-risk HPV detected) or negative (high-risk HPV not detected). A negative result means that none of the 14 high-risk HPV types were found in the sample, which is reassuring for cervical cancer risk. A positive result means that high-risk HPV DNA was identified, but it does not mean cancer is present or will develop; the majority of HPV infections clear without intervention. A positive result does indicate that follow-up monitoring is recommended to ensure that the infection resolves and does not lead to precancerous changes. Healthcare providers can discuss the appropriate follow-up schedule and any additional testing that may be warranted.

Reference ranges shown are general guidelines. Your lab report will include the specific reference range used by the laboratory that processed your sample, which is the authoritative range for interpreting your results.

What does a “Low” result mean?

A negative HPV test means you don't have a high-risk strain of HPV. This puts you at a low risk of developing cervical cancer in the near future. Depending on your age and screening history, you may not need another test for 3 to 5 years.

What does a “High” result mean?

A positive HPV test means you have one of the strains of HPV that increases your risk of developing cervical cancer. This test result doesn't mean you already have cervical cancer. It does mean that you have an HPV infection, which increases your risk for getting cervical precancer or cancer in the future. You may have a high-risk strain and never develop cervical cancer, as your body may fight off the infection.

Privacy & confidentiality

Your HPV test results are delivered through a secure online portal and are never shared with employers, insurance companies, or other third parties without your explicit consent. All samples are processed at certified laboratories with strict privacy protections, ensuring your reproductive health information remains completely confidential.
