What this test measures

The Senior Wellness Panel is a broad screening designed to evaluate the organ systems and nutritional markers most susceptible to age-related change. It combines blood and urine tests that assess cardiovascular health, blood sugar control, thyroid function, blood cell production, kidney and liver performance, iron stores, and key vitamin levels.

The panel includes a Complete Blood Count (CBC), Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP), Lipid Panel, Hemoglobin A1c, Thyroid Panel (TSH), Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Iron/Ferritin studies, and Urinalysis. These tests address several concerns that become more prevalent with age: declining nutrient absorption (particularly iron, B12, and vitamin D), shifts in thyroid function that affect metabolism and energy, rising cardiovascular and diabetes risk, and gradual changes in kidney and liver efficiency. Nutritional deficiencies in older adults can produce symptoms like unexplained fatigue, muscle and joint discomfort, weight changes, and cognitive fogginess that are often attributed to aging itself but may be correctable once identified. This panel provides a detailed baseline from which healthcare providers can track trends, guide treatment decisions, and support preventive care.

Who should consider this test

You might consider this test if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Adults age 50 and older who want a comprehensive annual health screening to establish baseline values and monitor changes in their health status over time.
  • Individuals with a family history of heart disease, diabetes, thyroid disorders, or kidney disease who need regular monitoring of relevant biomarkers.
  • People experiencing unexplained symptoms such as persistent fatigue, weight changes, muscle weakness, or changes in energy levels that may indicate underlying health conditions.
  • Those taking medications that may affect liver function, kidney health, or blood sugar levels and require regular monitoring of organ function markers.
  • Adults who want to assess their cardiovascular risk factors through cholesterol testing and inflammatory markers before making lifestyle or treatment decisions.
  • Individuals concerned about nutritional deficiencies, particularly vitamin D and B12, which become more common with age and can affect energy, bone health, and cognitive function.

What to expect

Preparation

Fasting for 9-12 hours is required before your appointment, with only water permitted during this time. If you take medications that must be taken with food, consult your healthcare provider about timing. Plan your appointment for the morning if possible to minimize fasting discomfort.

Sample Type

The test requires both a blood draw and a urine sample. The blood draw involves inserting a small needle into a vein in your arm to collect several tubes of blood for the various tests included in the panel.

Collection

At the lab location, you'll provide identification and complete any required paperwork. A trained phlebotomist will collect your blood sample, which typically takes 5-10 minutes. You'll also provide a urine sample in a provided container.

Turnaround

Results are typically available within 1-3 business days and will be accessible through your secure online account. No doctor visit is required to order or receive your results.

Understanding your results

The panel generates values across multiple body systems, and the results are most useful when interpreted together rather than one marker at a time. Each biomarker is reported with a reference range, and age-appropriate norms may differ from those used for younger adults. Healthcare providers evaluate findings in the context of the individual's medical history, current medications, symptoms, and overall functional status to determine whether any values warrant intervention or continued monitoring.

PopulationReference RangeNotes
Adult MalesHemoglobin: 13.8-17.2 g/dL, Total Cholesterol: <200 mg/dL, Glucose: 70-100 mg/dL, PSA: <4.0 ng/mLReference ranges vary by specific test component and may differ slightly between laboratories
Adult FemalesHemoglobin: 12.1-15.1 g/dL, Total Cholesterol: <200 mg/dL, Glucose: 70-100 mg/dLFemale reference ranges for certain markers may vary based on age and hormonal status
General Adult PopulationA1C: <5.7%, TSH: 0.4-4.5 mU/L, Vitamin D: 30-100 ng/mL, Vitamin B12: 200-900 pg/mLOptimal ranges may vary based on individual health conditions and risk factors

Reference ranges may vary by laboratory and individual factors. Results should be interpreted by a healthcare provider in the context of your overall health.

What does a “Low” result mean?

Low results may indicate anemia, infection, inflammation, or other blood disorders affecting kidney function. Iron deficiency will lower the red blood cell count, and a deficiency in B12 can lead to macrocytic anemia characterized by the production of fewer but larger red blood cells. B12 deficiency can also lead to varying degrees of neuropathy, nerve damage that can cause tingling and numbness in the hands and feet. 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels below 25 ng/mL are associated with an increased risk of secondary hyperparathyroidism, reduced bone mineral density, and fractures, particularly in the elderly. Low thyroid hormone levels may indicate hypothyroidism, which can cause fatigue, weight gain, and other metabolic symptoms.

What does a “High” result mean?

Elevated results in various components of this panel may indicate conditions such as diabetes, inflammation, infections, anemia, liver disease, kidney failure, or heart disease. These tests include measurements related to a variety of health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, liver function, kidney function, inflammation, infections, cancer, anemia, and thyroid function. Elevated glucose levels may suggest diabetes or prediabetes, but the CMP alone cannot diagnose diabetes. If glucose levels are higher than expected, your doctor may recommend additional tests, such as a fasting glucose test, an A1C test, or an oral glucose tolerance test, to confirm a diagnosis. Higher levels in lipid markers may indicate increased cardiovascular risk, while elevated inflammatory markers could suggest underlying inflammation that warrants further evaluation.

Privacy & confidentiality

Your Senior Wellness Panel results are completely confidential and protected under HIPAA regulations. Results are not shared with your personal physician unless you choose to do so, and they are not added to your medical records or insurance claims.
