What this test measures
This test detects Trichomonas vaginalis, a single-celled protozoan parasite transmitted through sexual contact, using nucleic acid amplification technology (NAAT). The molecular approach identifies the parasite's genetic material (ribosomal RNA) in a urine sample, offering significantly greater sensitivity than older detection methods like wet mount microscopy or culture, both of which can miss a substantial proportion of infections.
Trichomoniasis is one of the most common curable STIs, yet it is frequently overlooked in routine screening. An estimated 70% of infected individuals experience no symptoms, which means the infection often persists and is transmitted unknowingly. When symptoms do occur, they may include irritation, discharge, or discomfort during urination. Trichomoniasis responds well to antibiotic treatment, and identifying the infection is important not only for symptom relief but also because untreated trichomoniasis can increase susceptibility to other sexually transmitted infections.
Who should consider this test
You might consider this test if you are experiencing any of the following:
- People experiencing unusual discharge, genital itching, burning during urination, or pelvic discomfort
- Individuals who have had unprotected sex with new or multiple partners
- Those whose partner has been diagnosed with trichomoniasis or another STI
- Women experiencing symptoms that could indicate bacterial vaginosis or other vaginal infections
- People seeking comprehensive STI screening as part of routine sexual health care
- Individuals in high-risk settings or communities where trichomoniasis is more common
- Anyone who wants confidential testing without the need to discuss symptoms with a healthcare provider
What to expect
Preparation
No special preparation needed. For urine testing, avoid urinating for at least 1 hour before collection. Do not use genital deodorants or douches for 24 hours before testing as these can interfere with results.
Sample Type
Simple urine collection in a sterile container - specifically the first part of urination (first-void urine) which tends to have the highest concentration of organisms if present
Collection
Walk into any Quest Diagnostics location with your test order. Present valid ID and provide the urine sample. The entire process typically takes just a few minutes.
Turnaround
Results are typically available within 1-3 business days and will be securely delivered to your online account
Understanding your results
Results are reported as "Detected" or "Not Detected." A detected result indicates the presence of Trichomonas vaginalis genetic material in the sample and strongly supports a diagnosis of active infection. A not-detected result suggests no infection was found, though results should be considered alongside symptoms and clinical history. The molecular testing method used has very high sensitivity and specificity, meaning it reliably identifies true infections and rarely produces false positives. Healthcare providers can discuss treatment options and partner notification following a positive result.
| Population | Reference Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| All tested individuals | Not Detected or Detected | This is a qualitative test - results are reported as positive or negative, not numerical values |
Reference ranges shown are general guidelines. Your lab report will include the specific reference range used by the laboratory that processed your sample, which is the authoritative range for interpreting your results.
What does a “Low” result mean?
Not applicable - this test reports detected vs. not detected rather than high/low values.
What does a “High” result mean?
A positive/detected result indicates active trichomoniasis infection that requires antibiotic treatment. The infection can be passed to sexual partners and may increase risk of acquiring other STIs.
Privacy & confidentiality
Your test results are completely confidential and will only be shared with you through your secure online account. Results are not shared with insurance companies, employers, or anyone else without your explicit permission. All testing is conducted at accredited laboratories that follow strict privacy protocols.
