If you are paying cash for blood work, the useful question is not "what does blood work cost?" It is "what exact test, ordered through which channel, with which fees included?" A doctor-ordered lab routed through insurance, a hospital direct-access lab, Quest Health, Labcorp OnDemand, and a self-pay marketplace can all use familiar test names while producing very different bills.

Why prices vary so much
A lab test price is partly the chemistry and partly the billing route. The chemistry may be the same CBC or CMP, but the final price can change when an order includes physician authorization, phlebotomy, a platform fee, a hospital outpatient facility charge, insurance claim processing, or bundled markers.
Quest Diagnostics has a self-pay estimate workflow for patients who are not using insurance. Quest says the estimate is also called a good faith estimate, and the workflow asks whether the patient is self-paying. That is different from buying a consumer-directed Quest Health test with a published checkout price.
Insurance is not always cheaper
Insurance can be cheaper when the test is covered, medically necessary, coded correctly, and routed to an in-network lab. It can be more expensive or less predictable when a deductible applies, a test is denied, the lab is out of network, the diagnosis code does not support coverage, or the patient wants privacy from an explanation of benefits.
This is the main advantage of self-pay testing: you can usually see the price before ordering. For routine wellness or privacy-sensitive testing, a transparent cash price can be easier to plan around than a claim that turns into a surprise bill later.
How to compare self-pay lab prices
- Match the exact test. CBC and CBC with differential are not identical. TSH is not a full thyroid panel. Total testosterone is not free and total testosterone.
- Check the sample and lab network. Some orders use Quest, some use Labcorp, and some use local hospital labs or mail-in kits.
- Look for add-on fees. Physician service fees, draw fees, processing fees, and shipping fees can change the final number.
- Compare bundles against individual tests. A wellness panel can be cheaper than ordering CBC, CMP, lipid panel, A1c, vitamin D, TSH, and ferritin one by one.
- Confirm requirements before school, employment, immigration, or compliance testing. A cheap test is not useful if it is the wrong test type.
Common LTS pages to start from
LabTestSuperstore is currently in partner-link mode while affiliate approvals and tracking are being finalized. That means some pages route users toward outside lab-purchase options rather than an LTS checkout. These pages are still useful as comparison anchors:
- CBC Test
- Comprehensive Metabolic Panel
- Lipid Panel
- Hemoglobin A1c Test
- Basic Thyroid Panel
- Vitamin D Test
- Ferritin Test
- Free and Total Testosterone Test
- Expanded STD Panel
- TB Blood Test
Bottom line
Without insurance, basic blood work can be inexpensive when ordered through a transparent self-pay channel, but the spread widens fast once hormones, vitamin testing, STD panels, TB testing, advanced lipids, or broad wellness panels are involved. The smart move is to compare exact test names, included markers, lab network, and final checkout price before the blood draw.
